There's a new optimism surrounding the health of Madison Bumgarner.

An initial evaluation of the San Francisco Giants' ace Tuesday revealed he will not require surgery following his involvement in a dirt bike accident, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Bay Area News Group.

Baggarly adds Bumgarner is expected to begin a rehab program in four-to-five days and could be ready to throw off a mound in two months.

The 27-year-old suffered a left shoulder sprain and bruised ribs when he fell off a rented dirt bike in the Denver mountains during the Giants' off day last Thursday.

On Monday, Bumgarner spoke to reporters for the first time since the accident, and admitted the decision to ride a dirt bike in the midst of the season wasn't the best idea.

"It's terrible. Obviously that was not my intentions when I set out to enjoy the off day. I realize that's definitely not the most responsible decision I've made," Bumgarner said. "It sucks not being able to be out here with my guys and try to help us win some games.

"It's just very unfortunate. I've talked to a lot them. They know where I'm at and everybody's been super supportive, too - the organization, the guys, everything."
