Watch: Stroman loses no-hitter in 7th inning of WBC final

Kelvin Kuo / USA TODAY Sports

Marcus Stroman has a penchant for showing up in big games, and he did it again in the World Baseball Classic final.

The United States right-hander twirled a no-hitter against Puerto Rico in the tournament finale through six innings, before Angel Pagan's double into left field broke up the feat to begin the seventh.

Stroman was then promptly pulled from the game by U.S. skipper Jim Leyland, but was showered by a rousing applause from American fans at Dodger Stadium as the 25-year-old Toronto Blue Jays pitcher made his way back to the dugout.

Prior to being pulled, Stroman had faced the minimum 19 batters in his outing, throwing just 72 pitches before having a 92.5-mph fastball sent into opposite field by Pagan. The only batter he failed to immediately seat was Carlos Beltran in the second inning, though he had Yadier Molina ground out into a double play in the next at-bat.

Despite his performance, Stroman's no-hitter likely would have ended early regardless, as hurlers are limited to just 95 pitches in the final round.
