Donaldson hoping calf injury only keeps him out a couple weeks

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson arrived to the clubhouse Sunday with crutches, but managed to hobble to his media session without them - though he did sport a noticeable limp.

"I'm sore," Donaldson told reporters. "But overall the rest of my body, I feel great. I feel like I had a pretty great offseason. Most of my offseason was to prevent things like this, but it shows up every now and again and we'll get it taken care of and hopefully (the calf) will be strong for Opening Day."

The three-time All-Star suffered a right calf strain while participating in sprinting drills on Friday, the first official workout day for position players.

"I was doing some sprint work and it was one of those things - a freak accident," Donaldson said. "I had a great workout before that. I was excited about starting spring training and it's just a little bump in the road right now. Whenever the time comes I'll be ready."

Donaldson is expected to be treated and monitored daily, though he was unable to give an official timeline for his recovery.

"I'm hoping it's just a couple weeks to get out there, but it's something that we don't want to necessarily push too much," Donaldson said. "We have a little extra time with spring training right now and just making sure that whenever I step back on the field it's ready to go and I'm ready to push it."

Donaldson was bothered by a calf issue at the start of last season, but said the injuries are not related - this time it's his right calf that's the issue, not the left.
