Report: Mets exercise 2017 option on Reyes, buy out Niese

Jose Reyes has earned another season with the New York Mets.

The club is reportedly exercising its league-minimum option to bring back the infielder in 2017, sources tell Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball.

Reyes was signed by the Mets in June after the Rockies released him following a 51-game suspension for violating MLB's domestic violence policy. The 33-year-old quietly put together a solid season for the Mets, slashing .267/.326/.443 in 60 games with New York while slotting in defensively at third base and shortstop.

One player the Mets aren't bringing back, however, is starter Jon Niese, opting instead to exercise a $500,000 buyout clause in his contract. After being reacquired by the Mets at the trade deadline, the left-hander struggled to solidify a spot in the rotation before having his season cut short in August due to knee surgery.
