Watch: Miami crowd chants 'Jose' as Marlins circle mound postgame
With the crowd chanting his name, the Miami Marlins dedicated Monday's win to their fallen teammate, Jose Fernandez.
After reliever A.J. Ramos evoked a soft groundout from New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson, the mourning Marlins provided their fans with a rare moment of cheer by locking up the emotional 7-3 victory. In memory of Fernandez, the team then huddled around the mound - just as they did pregame - and dedicated their win to the late 24-year-old by laying their caps on the dirt.
Marlins pitcher Adam Conley, who filled in for Fernandez's scheduled start Monday, refused to take credit for his team's win.
"That was Jose's mound today before I went and took it," he told reporters postgame.
Though his team was tagged with the loss, Mets manager Terry Collins understands the result is trivial in the bigger picture.
"This was bigger than baseball tonight. This touched a lot of people," he told reporters.
