Farrell: Wright not available for ALDS

Steven Wright, the Boston Red Sox knuckleballer who hasn't pitched since Aug. 31 due to a right shoulder issue, won't be available for the American League Division Series, manager John Farrell told reporters Friday.

Wright injured his shoulder pinch running for David Ortiz at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 7. He threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Thursday, but has yet to start facing hitters and won't be ready by the time ALDS rosters are due next Thursday.

"It's likely he throws two more 'pens, the next being Monday, before we would look to alter his program - in other words, start to see hitters," Farrell explained, adding that he has yet to set his rotation for the best-of-five series.

Before that freak injury on the basepaths derailed his season, Wright was in the midst of a breakout campaign, having earned his first career All-Star appearance after crafting a 2.68 ERA through his first 17 starts. Though the 32-year-old struggled after the All-Star break, allowing 21 earned runs in 36 2/3 innings (some of which he labored through while beset by shoulder trouble), Wright still managed a 3.33 ERA through a career-high 156 2/3 innings this season.
