High schooler avoids tag with insane spin move
Is this even legal?
Derrek Johnson, a high-school player in Snohomish, Wash., looked to be dead in the water during a rundown at home plate. Emerald Ridge catcher Dominik Zombik looked to make a perfect tag. Somehow, Johnson pulled a Houdini by doing a 360 on the ground to twist past the catcher, avoid the tag, and score standing up.
The incredible escape was an incredibly close and contentious play, though. Johnson said he wasn't tagged, but Emerald Ridge head coach Larry Marshall believed otherwise.
"The bottom line was I saw the tag," Marshall told TJ Cotterill of The News Tribune. "We don't do fake tags. We got him."
Johnson's move was nothing new to his teammates, however. They apparently nicknamed him "DJ Wiggles" for his propensity to escape rundowns in practice.
The play vaulted Snohomish High to a 2-0 win over Emerald Ridge in the Washington 4A state tournament.
