Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion that he had sex with a 15-year-old girl, according to the BBC.

Reports emerged Monday in The Sun of an unnamed Premier League player being questioned by police in relation to the incident, and it was later revealed that the 27-year-old was the man in question.

"He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquiries," Durham Police said of the Englishman, as quoted by the BBC.

The Guardian notes that police arrested Johnson at his home Monday morning. The outlet also quotes a neighbour of Johnson, who described the scene when police arrived at the England international's house in County Durham.

"All the main activity was between 9.15 a.m. and 9.35 a.m.," the neighbour was quoted as saying.

"Three undercover cars and a scenes of crime van arrived. You could tell they were police officers, they were all dressed in black.

"I haven’t seen the player all day. I just assumed there had been a burglary. As far as I know he lives there with his girlfriend."

In light of his arrest, Johnson, who joined Sunderland from Manchester City in 2012 and has 12 international caps to his name, has been suspended by the club.

"Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation," read a club statement quoted by the Guardian. "No further comment will be made at the present time."
