UEFA sanctions Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray for crowd disturbances
Sanctions were handed out by UEFA on Wednesday regarding the crowd disturbances that took place during Borussia Dortmund's Champions League fixture against Galatasaray in early November.
The match was interrupted in the opening minutes of the second half when Galatasaray supporters threw a flare onto the pitch at the Westfalenstadion. Play was then held up again when flares were launched into a section of the stadium containing Dortmund fans in the game's final moments.
While Dortmund have been fined €32,000 ($40,159) for the throwing of objects, crowd disturbance, and insufficient organization, Galatasaray are facing sanctions that are significantly stiffer.
Charged with crowd disturbances, field invasions by supporters, and the setting off/throwing of fireworks and missiles, the Turkish club have been fined €70,000 ($87,848) and ordered to contact Dortmund within 30 days for the settlement of the damages caused by its supporters.
German police have launched their own investigation into the crowd trouble, and are investigating Galatasaray supporters over attempted manslaughter, disturbing the peace, breaking laws regulating explosives, and laws on assembly.
