No. 28 Flavia Pennetta defeats Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 6-0
No. 29 Alize Cornet defeats Alexandra Dulgheru 6-2, 7-5

Notes: Sharapova looked like she was over the cold that bothered her in her first-round victory, calmly beating Diatchenko in straight sets. ... 99th-ranked Putintseva wanted nothing to do with her opponent, fellow 20-year-old Svitolina, or the chair umpire following her marathon three-set loss.

Women's Seeds Upset

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni defeats No. 3 Simona Halep 7-5, 6-1

Notes: This marks the second time Halep has been upset by Lucic-Baroni at a major. As the two-seed, Halep lost to the Croatian in the third round at last year's U.S. Open.

Men's Seeds Advancing

No. 2 Roger Federer defeats Marcel Granollers 6-2, 7-6, 6-3
No. 4 Tomas Berdych defeats Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3

No. 14 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeats Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-1, 6-1
No. 21 Pablo Cuevas defeats Dominic Thiem 7-6, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5

Notes: Federer was screaming at himself as he flubbed multiple backhand attempts during his second-round match. ... It's been a frustrating week for Federer, who was angered by a fan selfie incident following his first-round match. ... Nishikori is yet to drop a set at Roland Garros. He will face Benjamin Becker in the third round. ... Wawrinka struggled mightily with his serve, landing only 44 percent of his first serves, double faulting nine times, and needing four sets to beat the 71st-ranked Lajovic. ... In other news Wednesday, No. 29 Nick Kyrgios was given a walkover for his Thursday match as his second-round opponent Kyle Edmund withdrew due to a stomach injury. ... Play was suspended in the fifth set of the day's final match with No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber leading Pablo Andujar 1-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, 4-2.

Men's Seeds Upset

Lukas Rosol defeats No. 19 Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4. 6-2, 6-2
Nicolas Mahut defeats No. 24 Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3
Benoit Paire defeats No. 28 Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 7-5
Benjamin Becker defeats No. 32 Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 0-6, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8

Notes: 2014 Roland Garros semifinalist Gulbis will drop outside the top 80 in the ATP rankings as a result of his loss to Mahut, who joins fellow Frenchmen Simon, Monfils and Tsonga in the third round. ... Verdasco, who lost to Becker despite winning sets 6-0 and 6-1, took this questionable drop shot at match point to clinch the victory for his German opponent.
